====================
5. NYC Turing Fellowship Opportunity

The goal of this program is to attract top computer science and engineering students from around the country to work with the best startups in NYC for a summer. I’ve included a brief blurb below, as well as links to the website. This will be a one of a kind experience for selected winners to see entrepreneurship firsthand, and see what it takes to build a successful product or service.

We’ve gotten great response from schools like Princeton, Stanford, Purdue, Cornell, Caltech, and others… I’d love to see if we can attract some more strong local applicants from Columbia as well. The original deadline was Monday Feb 7 at midnight. However, due to increased demand, we have decided to extend the deadline to February 11th and to increase the number of Semi-finalist slots from 15 to 25.

We have also added another half a dozen of the best startups in NYC to the fellowship program, bringing the total number of participating companies to 25. These startups have collectively raised over $650 million in venture capital over the past few years and are well-recognized leaders in their respective markets.

Apply Here: http://nycturingfellows.org/howtoapply

New York City is a growing center for technology, media, and entrepreneurship. The NYC Turing Fellows Program seeks to match outstanding computer science, engineering, and mathematic students with paid summer internships at leading NYC startups. In addition, these students will benefit from a summer curriculum consisting of networking and mentoring events and be entitled to receive a $5,000 fellowship prize upon completion of the program. An exclusive group of NYC startups – including Foursquare, Tumblr, Squarespace, blip.tv, SecondMarket, Yipit, and others – are supporting and participating in this program.

Interested students should apply at www.nycturingfellows.org/howtoapply. The application deadline is February 11, 2011. A group of up to 25 Semi-Finalists will be invited to NYC on March 4th and 5th to explore different summer internship opportunities with participating startups. Students will be reimbursed for travel expenses and housing will be provided.

To learn more, please view our website, FAQ, or press release
3. HotStorage ’11 Call for Papers
On behalf of the 3rd Workshop on Hot Topics in Storage and File Systems
(HotStorage ’11) program committee, I would like to invite you to submit
papers that present a fresh look at file and storage technologies.

Storage systems continue to present important research challenges and
opportunities today. The rapid increase in the volume and variety of
digital data, the trend toward using commodity components rather than
custom-built hardware, the ability to insert new filesystem
functionality transparently in hypervisors, the emergence of persistent
storage memory technologies, the challenges of “big data,” the rise of
distributed key-value stores (such as nosql), and the proliferation of
storage devices in consumer electronics all offer exciting opportunities
and new challenges.

We expect the workshop submissions to advocate fresh, unorthodox
approaches advancing the state of the art in file and storage systems
design. Ideas presented in the workshop should provide a new look at
storage technologies and eventually lead to work that will likely appear
in top-tier systems conferences. The HotStorage workshop aims to bring
together researchers interested in presenting their thoughts and
